Dear Silas,
Welcome to our family little guy!!! You finally made your appearance into this world in pretty dramatic fashion. For the past few days I have been certain that my water broke, and after deciding to go in to get things checked out we found out that your heart rate was getting low. We were told that we had to be admitted to the hospital right then and there. Thankfully, Noelle (who I was in the PhD program with), was there to help guide us through the whole process and get us checked into the hospital. We were told that we had two options -- to be induced or to go straight to a C-Section. We were a little bit freaked out because we really had our hearts set on letting you come in your own time.
We decided to be induced so that we could give you somewhat of a chance to come when you were ready but that didn't really work out so well. Things were chugging along well for a while and we really thought that you would come "naturally" -- Felicia, another nurse midwife, helped us for most of the day and was really hopeful that everything was progressing well. As soon as her shift was over another nurse midwife came in and gave us some not so great news --- things had stopped progressing. She called in the doctors to check on us and it was determined that your heart rate was still not steady. They had to put some special equipment on your head to keep track of your heart and make sure you were doing well. After some time passed it was decided that you and I needed some extra help and some more doctors were called in. Your dada and I decided that things had gone on too long and we didn't want to risk anything happening to you so we decided to go ahead and have you delivered by C-section.
I guess I freaked out a little bit with some of the medication they gave me and I had to be given more medicine to calm me down -- well, pretty much knock me out! I guess when you were born you weren't breathing and they had to put a tube down your throat to help you get air, twice. We aren't really sure what happened because I was not awake and your dada had to leave the OR. However, you were soon handed over to dada's arms -- safe and snuggly. Your dada is a rock and is such an amazing husband, partner, helper etc....I don't even have enough words to praise how great your dada is. You are one luck boy to have such a great role model.
I, however, didn't recover quite as quick as you from the ordeal but eventually we were all reunited. After a few days in the hospital, a blood transfusion and some reminders of what it was like to have a brand new baby --- we headed home to have you meet your sister. She was super happy to have us all together again.....You are gonna love her!
